I libri di Jasper Fforde sono sempre ambientati in una sorta di universo (vari universi) paralleli, a volte dichiaratamente collegati tra loro [come la serie con Thursday Next, iniziata con [book:The Eyre Affair|2019737] (Il caso Jane Eyre), e i gialli ambientati nel mondo delle filastrocche con Jack Sprat], altre volte con solo riferimenti incrociati, ma stand alone fatti e finiti, come Shades of Grey e il qui presente Early Riser.
Questa volta il mondo costruito da Fforde è diviso tra un'estate relativamente normale e un inverno terribile, talmente terrificante da costringere la popolazione mondiale ad ibernarsi ogni autunno, sperando di risvegliarsi in primavera.
Come sempre noi siamo in Galles e il protagonista, Charlie Worthing, una sorta di scarto dei nati in uno dei nidi di infanzia sparsi per il paese, decide di entrare a far farte del mitico corpo dei Winter Consuls, che vigila sugli ibernati e difende i Dormitori dalla varia fauna (animale, umana e sovrannaturale) per tutta la durata dell'inverno.
La società in cui vive Charlie viene spiegata poco alla volta, non spiegando tutto nel dettaglio ma, come sempre, permettendo al lettore di immergersi comunque nella storia.
Non scenderò nei dettagli, sulla lotta intestina tra i Winter Consuls e la HiberTech, del destino dei Nightwalker (quei sfortunati che non si risvegliano del tutto e vagano come zombie per il paese) e del Gronck... dovrete leggerlo, in inglese temo, perché dubito verrà mai tradotto. Purtropo.
